FLAGSTAFF UPHILL
2/12/26
Dear Uphill Enthusiasts,

Uphill Access will close with the precipitation event beginning Friday evening, February 13th.

Another precipitation event is forecast beginning Sunday evening through the next week, thus Uphill Access will not re- open this weekend.

Snowcat drivers continue to report violations of the uphill route, with uphillers traversing to other terrain. This activity will result in the closure of the Uphill Travel Program indefinitely.

Nighttime staff depend upon knowing that uphill travelers will adhere to the established route, and not venture into areas where Mountain Operations are active.
Please adhere to the established Route on the map below:
Lot 2 parking, ascend Lower North Star, Roundup, Wild Turkey, and Logjam to the 'End of Uphill Route' stop sign at Midway Catwalk/Logjam junction.

This route is the ONLY Uphill Access option, and any travel elsewhere within the Permit Area is disruptive and unsafe for the public and the Mountain Operations Team working throughout the night on snowmobiles, snow cats and winch cats.

Arizona Snowbowl has designated the Uphill Route for the benefit of community enthusiasts and to delineate the only safe area to recreate before and after hours.

Further violations of the Uphill Access policy will result in the closure of the Uphill Program.

Burke Mountain, VT PSA: Winch Cats and Skiers Don’t Mix

There was an incident last night at Burke where a skier who had skinned up ran into the winch cable of the winch cat. The Mountain had made it clear that this trail was off limits after hours but apparently the “experienced” skier didn’t get the message. As a result, no more skinning...at least temporarily. Be smart out there!

Stowe, VT:
A winch cat is a groomer that is attached to a cable that is in turn attached to a heavy-duty anchor near the top of a slope too steep for normal snow-cats to maneuver. The groomer uses the cable to drag itself up and down the slope by unwinding or winding thousands of feet of braided steel cable.
"The danger to skiers in proximity of a relatively thin cable attached to a machine weighing more than 12 tons cannot be underestimated, Wehse said. Think about it: The resort saw uphill skiers in their winch cat grooming area and their response was to shut down the whole operation – THAT’S how dangerous it is.”
